About Ross

Ross Vennare (VENNmedia)As a hockey coach, instructor, journalist and referee, Ross Vennare places value in helping kids achieve more with their lives through the values and lessons that sport teaches us. He is also a very big community supporter.

He organized his first charity ‘Skate-a-thon’ in September, 2002 for Sick Kids. Only a few families showed up and a few hundred dollars was raised. The following year Ross tried to make his event much bigger and better. In November of 2003, the rink was full of Ross’ supporters as they skated around the rink for a few hours while raising money for Sick Kids. LEAFS TV was on hand to broadcast the event on their 24 hour channel.

A few months later, Ross organized and instructed in his own ball hockey camp out of a school gym for students in Richmond Hill, Ontario. With no advertising budget, Ross went door to door for a few weeks to find local kids who wanted to play ball hockey. To his surprise, he ran out of sign up sheets and his Monday nights were taken over by eager hockey students. His class was full!

In March of 2008, Ross was asked to officiate a NHL Alumni benefit game in Bracebridge, Ontario. Monies raised went to support the Special Olympics Torch Run. It was one of his greatest experiences.

A few days later, former NHL enforcer Jim Thomson asked Ross to be the head referee in a NHL Alumni benefit game in Aurora, Ontario. Monies raised supported a special needs school in the area. Michael Landsberg of TSN’s ‘Off The Record’ was a special guest coach while Daren Millard of Sportsnet’s ‘Hockey Central At Noon’ played goal. Ross awarded Daren Millard a penalty shot after he was interfered with by Stu Grimson (better known as ‘The Grim Reaper’).

Ross continues to help his community and contribute to the game of hockey. You can read all about Ross’ journey right here on Ross20.com
